Third Sunday of Easter – Year C
Word for today
The Gospel of John 21,1-19
All the fish
Because of stupidity, ignorance and laziness, the mind got used to misery. Training has accustomed it to misery, slavery, poverty, lack of space, narrow perspectives, to a life always on the edge, always subdued, scared, mediocre, shabby. Because it is so used to misery and poverty, the mind considers useful what is silly, beautiful what is flimsy, necessary what is futile, essential what is prompted. Training leads and compels to intellectual and existential misery, because spiritual and intellectual misery is directly proportional to image worship and is an unparallelled goldmine. The stronger the mind is channelled towards misery and mediocrity, the deeper it is mesmerized by the ego worship, by appearances, fashion, effimera. This way it becomes deaf, blind and dumb. Training soundproofs the mind so that it cannot hear anymore the soul singing, the heart’s passion, life and reality.
We have been persuaded that wellbeing and the rich and harmonious participation to the earth’s good is against God and Jesus’ gospel. We have been persuaded that living in wellbeing and being able to live well is matter of luck, or on a future already written just for the few ones who belongs to a privileged class, rather that a practical consequence of a precise procedure, fruit of a certain clear spiritual model. It is only in this way that few ones, in God’s and religions’ name, can keep their wellbeing, at the expense of everyone else.
We have been persuaded that being well and living well is a matter of destiny, consanguinity, and for the most evolved it even depends on caste decided at birth according to genetic fate, cyclic re-birthing in cosmic atonements, astral laws.
We have been taught that we are born poor and unlucky, or rich and lucky, and that’s all. We have been persuaded that life is made of hardship, fight, enemies, death, sadness, hell and fear. Everything works and produces according to this theme: culture, books, poetry, literature, history, religions, politics, architecture, fun, work, affections, media. Training teaches misery and poverty as the natural state of the soul, and performance anxiety as sense of responsability. We have been persuaded that misery is the rule, state of necessity is a virtue, resignation a kind of spiritual evolution. We have been deceived and convinced that the darkness’ misery is our natural state, and in this way our wishes have become gross, narrow, humiliating, inconclusive, unproductive. As wishes falls, faith fades, every kind of gratitude and beauty is made dumb. In this state the only option is to use the little we have to bet on luck or on the planets’ signs. Jesus teaches and proposes with divine power the detachment from property, the supreme overcoming of every kind of attachment, but He never ever teaches misery and poverty or meanness. He rather wishes His children – and He said it many times – joy, full joy, wellbeing and peace. It is through Jesus’ hands that the Father gave us the magnificence of creation that sustains and charms us, rich and wonderful magnificence, turgid and full. Man cannot be in any way determined by poverty, misery or lack in a world where everything is so rich, amazing, spacious and full of sun, beautiful and fulfilling. The God that Jesus came to reveal us never wanted to humiliate His children with misery and poverty. It is the dawn of one of the day after Jesus’ resurrection, the apostles came back to their occupations, they came back to their poverty, to their lack of wishes and wealth. Jesus met them and began as only He can do: Children, have you caught anything to eat? Their answer is: no, it is obvious. We are always in misery, in lack. So he said to them: “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something”. Here it is. Finding, fishing, reaching our wishes, wellbeing are never fruit of chance or fortune. It is a clear, precise and rigorous procedure. Casting the net over the right side of the boat is a symbolic indication, but extremely punctual and precise, that only doing things in a certain way allows to find what is needed without mistakes. Finding what we need, what helps, what is good for us. Even tough they did not know very well what they were doing, the apostles followed the procedure, they cast the net over the right side and the miracle happened, the miracle of abundance, wealth, wholeness, the miracle that always happens if we follows the procedure with love and dedication. But which is the procedure? The procedure is the Gospel, Jesus’ Word is the procedure. And what is Jesus’ first indication? Metanoèite, change your mind, your logos, the way you think, which is translated in the Jesus proposal to Peter to cast the net over the other side of the boat.
So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish.
Beautiful. The net got filled beyond their wishes, beyond their forces, God is like that, In the net there where one hundred fifty-three large fish. This is God, utter wellbeing, fullness of gifts, abundance of every good and peace. One hundred fifty-three is the number that represents all the species of fish known at the time of Jesus, it is like saying the Peter and his friends, following the evangelic procedure, received from the sea all the wealth and wellbeing possible and known. Whoever tries to get man used and determined to misery, lack, meanness does not come from God, does not talk in the name of God and does not lead to God.
