First Sunday of Advent – Year A

Word for today
The Gospel of Matthew 24:37-44

To wake up or to wander around

It is not true that we can do no get better than this. Of course we can! There is always a new, potentially different and better way for everything. All leaves are leaves, but not one, even on the same tree, is equal to any of the others. All drops are drops, but not one in all of the oceans and rivers moves, shines in the sun, soaks the ground, or evaporates in the same way as any other. All faces have two eyes, a nose, and a mouth, and yet in all of human history there is not, and never will be, a face like any other. Through whom or what can the Lord of life brighten, improve and ameliorate this life if not through the novelty, the uniqueness, the feeling, the prophecy, the nobility embodied by each of His divine children awakened by the Gospel?
This is what Jesus’ stay awake signifies. Stay awake or rather, if we translate this imperative in a more literal way, Jesus’ remain awake means that we must stay cautiously away from the dangerous mental attitude of thinking under the anesthetizing effect of opinions or of the mind’s wanderings without any awareness or perception of reality.
Stay awake means never building one’s personal beliefs on a replication of other people’s views either by adhering to or distancing oneself from other people’s convictions. That is the kind of slumber that kills the soul’s insight and an individual’s spiritual perception.
Stay awake means in every moment to stay intelligently connected to the One and the All, to His infinite beauty and harmony, to the divine smile to which we belong.
At Noah’s time, this kind of staying awake had almost entirely disappeared: they ate, drank, got married, and entered relationships; they sold and bought without the slightest perception that their world was about to end. A standardized, deceived world, under the control of the powerful and the mainstream, a world that was about to disappear; yet no one was aware of it. Stay awake distances us from the spiritual state of total oblivion which humiliates and kills the spiritual intelligence of God’s children and leads to all forms of slavery, tyranny, oppression.
This is the seed of the inner revolution proposed by the Gospel: stay awake, spiritually sharp, sensitive to the signs of the times, not blinded by opinions or by over exposure to the media which consumes the brain and burns the hearts although without causing any bleeding or wounds.
It is within the deepest recesses of our hearts that each of us must hear and decide whether or not we will love, whether or not we will have faith, whether or not we will once and for all embrace violence or forgiveness. This is the silent revolution which, beginning in the heart of each one of us will, like an unrestrainable yeast, leaven the great bread of our world with life, faith, love and shared well-being.
The devil is trying to block and delay this revolution of the spirit, this intellectual awakening. He is working overtime to build a system of non-thought which feeds on beliefs through the repetition of lies and conventions in order to generate weak, standardized mental structures without any insight or common sense. He will not succeed, because we are God’s children, each one different, noble, and able to choose to stay awake in the Spirit. The Lord holds the light and the salt to change history in each of His awakened children; it is up to us to believe it with greater conviction.
