Third Sunday of Advent – Year A
Word for today
The Gospel of Matthew 11:2-11
Understanding to see
If someone sees that, by the power of Jesus’ Word, the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the poor receive the good news, which is the coherent, efficient procedure for their liberation; if someone sees all this and still does not adhere, if not out of faith at least out of an acute, intelligent response to this light, nor exploits the evangelical procedures in every way possible to build cities, to manage businesses, and to live in a better, more healthy, happy and serene way, it is only right that the people of this generation live and die in the arms of mother stupidity.
God’s mercy can overcome everything: it can make every sin and every evil obsolete, it can even turn something bad into something good, it can make a heart which is darkened by evil as white as the snow, but it can do nothing about stupidity because stupidity is never quiet not even in the face of unequivocal evidence. Stupidity is forever.
